Safety Information

Even though the LAP-BAND is less invasive compared to other weight loss surgeries, it’s incredibly important to note that all surgical procedures have their inherent risks. Before you choose any bariatric procedure, it is crucial for your health and well-being to learn about the associated risks of the surgery. Discuss with your LAP-BAND surgeon in great detail about the potential risks and complications that might occur during your LAP-BAND surgery.

Indications: The LAP-BAND is indicated for the reduction of weight for patients with obesity. FDA requirements include BMI, or Body Mass Index, of at least 40 or a BMI of at least 30 with one or more weight-related health condition.

Contraindications: The LAPBAND is not recommended for patients under 18 years of age, as well as patients with underlying health conditions that may make them unqualified candidates or increase risks and complications of the procedure. Among these health conditions are cirrhosis, GI conditions, symptoms and/or family history of autoimmune diseases, and inflammatory or cardiopulmonary diseases. The LAP-BAND is not recommended for patients who are unwilling to make lifestyle changes and maintain the pre-operative nutritional program. Qualified patients must not have any addictions to alcohol or drugs. The LAP-BAND is not recommended for patients who currently are or may be pregnant.

Warnings: The Lap-Band is a medical implant intended for long-term use. Replacement and/or removal surgery may be necessary. Band adjustments may be necessary for patients who become ill, pregnant, or those who need additional nutrition. Aspirin, as well as other anti-inflammatory agents, should be taken with great caution. The use of these agents may increase the risk of the breakdown and erosion of the LAP-BAND.

Adverse Events: The placement of the LAP-BAND is major surgery and, as with other major surgeries, death is considered a potential risk. Complications during the placement may include the risks related to any surgical procedure, the methods and medications used during the procedure, and the patient’s ability to accept the placement of a foreign object in the body.

Possible side effects or complications may include but are not limited to nausea, vomiting, reflux, infection, band slippage, erosion and deflation, reflux, obstruction and the dilation of the esophagus. In some cases, reoperation may be necessary.

Health complications may result from excessive weight loss and it may be necessary to receive additional surgical procedures. Band adjustments may lessen excessive weight loss or the dilation of the esophagus.
